Children are not a distraction from more important work.
They are the most important work.
- C.S. Lewis
This quote has always spoke volumes to me. How easy we get distracted and roll through the motions of life. Family photos with our children being another thing to check off the list. But really, if we really truly see our children, then they can bring so much meaning and joy to all of the routine we are obliged to take part in. Documentary photography with families allows children to be themselves, to capture who they are in their play.
Terri and I have been on the same page since day one when it comes to our vision for a photo session. Two years ago when she first contacted me for newborn photos of her youngest daughter she shared that she wanted natural photos, nothing posed, "I'd much prefer to look back on these photos as a representation of how we were when this person entered our family". When I read those words I knew I was the right photographer for them. My goal when I enter a home is to capture the real moments, the laughter, sometimes even the tears. These are the parts of life that you will truly remember. Children are our most important work.
Standing and smiling at a stranger doesn't hold as much weight as running around your backyard with your kids until they squeal with laughter. It's always an honour to be invited in to capture these raw moments in someone's life.
Hope you can treasure these photos for many years Jon & Terri!
